Handa's Surprise
This week Junior Infants enjoyed the well known story Handa's Surprise by Eileen Browne. We read the story a number of times and used our newly learned skills of predicting and making connections to help understand the story. We programmed our Beebots to trace the fruits in the story and the animals Handa "met" along the way. We also watched an animated version of the story online which we really enjoyed. Click on the link to watch it: Handa's Surprise.
Later in the week we looked at the fruits in the story. We had bananas, oranges, avocados, mangoes, passion fruits a pineapple and tangerines but we had no guava. First we examined the fruits and discussed which ones were heaviest/lightest, roughest/smoothest etc. Then we arranged the fruits in a bowl and did some still life drawings. Lastly we cut the fruit and had a taste. We really enjoyed trying them out and we were very adventurous. Some people had pineapple for the first time and really enjoyed it. Our favourite fruits were the tangerines and the mango.
